1st Ponteland Scouts took home the District Matt Thompson Trophy to their HQ last weekend.  In the Castle Morpeth District competition, 7 teams of Scouts from 4th Morpeth, 1st Ponteland and Stannington Ridley Scouts took part in a geochaching competition, hiking around the Longhorsley area searching for hidden objects using maps, compasses and GPS devices.  Well done to all the Scouts who took part, the leaders who supervised it and to 4th Morpeth Scout Group for organising it.  What will be the them for the next Matt Thompson Trophy competition?

It’s been a really busy start to the new Scouting year for a Scouts and Explorers. To build up to it, over the summer holidays 4th Morpeth were at the Red Rose camp in Lancashire for a week, and Ponteland Scouts were camping and having great outdoor adventures nearer to home.
Getting in the mood for the start of the new year, our Morpeth and Ponteland Explorers Gold DofE groups successfully completed their 4-day unassisted expeditions in the glorious Yorkshire Dales (although the Morpeth group had less-than-glorious Yorkshire summer weather!!!).

Two of the most important  things in anyone’s life, but sadly missing in many parts of the world- Ponteland Scouts played their part in trying to remedy this by supporting and raising money for 2 charities and their efforts were boosted on Sunday will some great fundraising at Ponteland’s Party-in-the-Park.

What a Sunday!  Morpeth fair and Ponteland Party-in-the-Park were both last Sunday with a great Scouting presence at both events.
In Morpeth our band of adult and youth volunteers manned the CaveBus activity – on a hot and sunny day, dozens of young people crawled through dark tunnels and caves and emerged beaming with delight. We took the opportunity to explain to parents the adventure and fun that modern Scouting can give young people and adults alike.

Over the bank holiday weekend, about 150 Cubs, Scouts and Explorers from 4th Morpeth, 6th Morpeth, 1st Ponteland and Morpeth Explorer Unit joined with 1500 other young people and 400 adult volunteers for the Northumberland County Circus Marra Camp at Causey Park.  Beavers joined the camp for one of the days

Four Beaver Scouts from 4th Morpeth Friday colony have reached the heights of Beaver Scouting by earning all the badges that were available  – 28 of them in all, including the highest award that a Beaver can achieve – the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award.
Clive Rich, District Commissioner congratulated the four for the hard work that they put in during their Beaver meetings and at home, then presented each with a medal, a certificate and a large “Beaver – well done”  badge – if they have anywhere left on their jumpers …

1st Ponteland Tuesday Beaver colony paid a visit to St Mary’s church to help them complete their Faith and Promise badges. They had a fun-filled evening completing a picture treasure hunt and doing stone rubbings which they displayed in the walls of their headquarters:  they even got to try ringing the church bells !  A great evening was had by all, and thanks to all at St Mary’s for hosting it.

There has been a very significant 13% rise in the number of young people in Scouting in the Castle Morpeth District in the pat year.  The increase runs across the Scout Groups  Morpeth, Ponteland, Stannington and Pegswood and is consistent in all age ranges from 6 to 25.  As if that wasn’t enough, teh 4th Morpeth Group which meets at Low Stanners increased by well over 30% in the past year and now has over 200 young people

Two Explorer Scouts have been rewarded for their continued Scouting activity and commitment by being awarded the Queen’s Scout Award.  Matthew Frain and Rogelio Medina completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh award and a further two activity projects to qualify for the award.  District Commissioner Clive Rich congratulated both, reminding them that “the Queen’s Scout Award is still earning by only a small proportion of all Scouts and is a significant achievement.
